Anaemia in patients with chronic liver disease and its association with morbidity and mortality following liver transplantation
International Journal of Surgery Mar 05, 2018
Collas O, et al. - In view of the high prevalence of anaemia in patients with severe chronic liver disease, researchers investigated its correlation with an altered morbidity and mortality following liver transplant. Unlike in other major surgery, anaemia was not observed to be associated with an increased risk of mortality post liver transplant. Haemoglobin levels showed an inverse correlation with MELD scores. Low haemogloblin levels were associated with higher mortality when MELD scores were removed from the analysis, suggesting that anaemia could reflect worse pre-operative burden of disease.
