An increasing rate of surgical management of closed tibia fractures in an adolescent population: A national database study

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Nov 06, 2019

Essilfie A, et al. - Persons aged 10 to 18 years with closed diaphyseal tibia fractures were involved in order to determine the rising rate for the surgical management of closed tibia fractures in the adolescent population. Between 1997 and 2012, for closed tibia fractures in the adolescent population, the rate of internal fixation (IF) rose by 29.8%. Between patients aged 10 to 12 years, 13 to 15 years, and 16 to 18 years, the rate of progress in IF was not statistically distinctive. Analysis of hospital variables illustrated that in comparison with small- and medium-sized hospitals, large hospitals were more inclined to do IF. In the length of hospital stay and cost, a notable variation exists between the IF and closed reduction groups. Thus, the outcomes of this study exhibit a change in the management of closed tibia shaft fractures in the adolescent population who were admitted to the hospital, with an absolute rate rise of 29.8% in individuals aged 10 to 18 years over a 15-year period.
