An exploratory study of the relationship between postoperative nausea and vomiting and postdischarge nausea and vomiting in children undergoing ambulatory surgery
Paediatric Anaesthesia Apr 21, 2019
Chandrakantan A, et al. - In this preliminary institution-approved study including 122 children aged 5-10 years undergoing elective ambulatory surgery, researchers investigated the factors influencing postdischarge nausea and vomiting in ambulatory children, in particular, they determined if postoperative nausea and vomiting factors were contributory. Male gender and the presence of pain on discharge were identified as predictors of nausea at discharge, as revealed in the multiple logistic regression analyses. The presence of nausea at discharge and having a family history of nausea/vomiting were predictors of emesis on day of surgery. Only the presence of nausea on discharge predicted the presence of nausea on postoperative day 1. Overall, the possibility of the persistence of postoperative nausea and vomiting into the postdischarge period was suggested and pain could be a contributing factor.
