An evaluation of sex differences in patients with chronic pain undergoing an interdisciplinary pain treatment program

Pain Practice Aug 07, 2019

Racine M, Solé E, Sánchez-Rodríguez E, et al. - Researchers examined how gender influences pretreatment pain intensity, physical function, psychological function, pain beliefs, kinesiophobia, pain catastrophizing and activity management patterns in a sample of patients participating in a 4-week interdisciplinary pain treatment. Further, they examined treatment response by gender. Study measures were completed by 72 men and 130 women with chronic pain. With respect to the overall burden of chronic pain, men and women displayed a comparable profile. Before treatment, men vs women described higher levels of kinesiophobia, showed a higher likelihood to view their pain as being harmful, and used more activity pacing when doing daily activities. Women vs men had a higher likelihood to use an overdoing activity pattern. The interdisciplinary pain management program seemed to benefit women more than men.
