An economic analysis of human milk supplementation for very low birth weight babies in the USA
BMC Pediatrics Sep 22, 2019
Hampson G, et al. - An economic analysis of exclusive human milk diet (EHMD) vs usual practice of care among very low birth weight (VLBW) babies (below 1,250 g) was performed in the US, which is to include cow's milk-based products when required. Observations revealed a substantial reduction in mortality and improvement in other health outcomes in relation to an EHMD, in addition to its relation with the generation of substantial cost savings of $16,309 per infant by reducing adverse clinical events. Inclusion of wider societal costs led to an increase in cost savings to $117,239 per infant. These observations support EHMD as a cost-effective option, that means it is both cost-saving and clinically beneficial, for VLBW babies in a US-based setting.
