An analysis of risk factors in unilateral vs bilateral hearing loss
ENT Journal Jul 23, 2019
Howell JB, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective review to evaluate and compare the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) risk factor profiles of infants with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) or bilateral hearing loss (BHL) utilizing updated, population-based information to better comprehend UHL and BHL etiology. There were 504,654 infants born in the Commonwealth of Virginia who had universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2014. Data reported that nearly 51% of children with confirmed BHL and confirmed UHL had a JCIH risk factor. The most commonly identified risk factor in both UHL and BHL populations were neonatal indicators. Children with UHL were much more probable to have craniofacial anomalies, while kids with BHL were more likely to have hearing loss family history. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the etiology underlying the associations of hearing loss and risk factor.
