An analysis of 969 patients with pelvic fractures stratified by the presence or absence of solid organ injury

Marini CP, Pérez SMSM, Betancourt-Ramírez A, et al. - Researchers examined how solid organ injury (SOI) influence the outcome of patients with pelvic fractures. In addition, they sought risk factors predictive of morbidity and mortality among these patients. They conducted a single-center retrospective study of 979 patients (16 years or older) with pelvic fractures with and without associated solid organ injury from blunt trauma documented by x-ray and CT scan during a five- and half-year study period. Two hundred forty-six patients had SOI grade ranging from I to III, grade IV SOI was documented in five patients and grade V in 10 patients with SOI sustained a higher pelvic AIS grade and required a statistically significant greater amount of blood products. No impact of the presence of solid organ injury on the outcome of patients with pelvic fracture was observed. Findings suggest a predictive value of the degree of pelvic AIS for associated injuries within the abdomen and chest.
