Amyloid β deposition in subcortical stroke patients and effects of educational achievement: A pilot study
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Jul 26, 2019
Yasuno F, et al. - In order to establish a direct causal relationship of cerebrovascular risk factors/stroke with amyloid β (Aβ) deposition, researchers analyzed subacute ischemic stroke patients and healthy controls in [11C] Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB)-PET positron emission tomography (PET) analysis and tested if cortical regions in subacute ischemic stroke patients show focal Aβ accumulation. They hypothesized that, during the chronic phase after stroke onset, these would increase and extend overtime. Among patients who were recruited 14–28 days following acute subcortical ischemic stroke, they noted a significant increase of [11C]PiB-BPND of the precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PCu/PCC) in voxel-based analysis. As per results, Aβ deposition in the PCu/PCC may be activated by processes before and after ischemic stroke onset, whereby amyloid deposition begins at an early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Findings thereby suggest that vascular risk factors/stroke and AD progression have a cooperative link. There seemed to be a protective effect of educational achievement against the increase in Aβ accumulation.
