American cutaneous leishmaniasis in French Guiana: An epidemiological update and study of environmental risk factors
International Journal of Dermatology Sep 21, 2019
Loiseau R, Nabet C, Simon S, et al. - Given that American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is endemic in French Guiana, researchers conducted this multicentric study to update clinical and epidemiological data concerning ACL in French Guiana, as well as to investigate geographic and behavioral risk factors for the infection. This investigation was carried out from October 2017 to June 2018 in French Guiana. In case of positive smear, culture, or polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism on skin biopsy, patients with suspicion of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis were involved. The inclusion criteria were met by 123 patients. Data reported that 59.3% of these patients were Brazilian, mostly gold miners. According to findings, gold mining and primary forest trips represent high-risk situations for ACL in French Guiana, where Brazilian immigrants dominate the infected patient population. Possible environmental risk factors such as dog presence, water sources, and traditional wooden houses need further research.
