Ambient air pollution and ovarian cancer survival in California
Gynecologic Oncology Aug 03, 2021
Villanueva C, Chang J, Ziogas A, et al. - Researchers investigated if ovarian cancer-specific survival is influenced by exposure to ambient ozone, particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and distance to major roadways (DTR), while taking into account differences by stage, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Using the California Cancer Registry, women diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer from 1996 to 2014 were selected for inclusion. Univariate models showed a significant link of PM 2.5 and NO 2 , but not of ozone or DTR, with survival. Findings indicate that ovarian cancer-specific survival may be adversely affected by greater exposure to NO 2 and PM 2.5 , independent of sociodemographic and treatment factors.
