Amantadine for the treatment of refractory absence seizures in children

Journal of Pediatric Neurosciences Jul 09, 2018

Sreedharan M, et al. - The safety and efficacy of amantadine in children with refractory absence seizures was examined in this analysis. Researchers reviewed the cases of 48 children with typical absence seizures attending the outpatient department of a tertiary care neurological center over a period of 3 years from July 2013 to June 2016. Researchers chose four children who were refractory to standard treatment for at least 1 year to start on amantadine 4-6mg/kg/day, after obtaining informed consent. For children with absence epilepsy refractory to multiple drugs, amantadine could be tried as a safe add-on drug, since no significant adverse effects were noted. Its effectiveness will need to be proven in further studies.
