AMACR overexpression acts as a negative prognostic factor in oral squamous cell carcinoma

International Journal of Medical Sciences Jun 24, 2018

He HL, et al. - In patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), researchers examined the expression of alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase (AMACR) and its predictive ability. They evaluated the protein expression of AMACR in 164 subjects with oral SCC via immunohistochemistry. AMACR overexpression was significantly correlated with advanced tumor status, advanced nodal status, increased vascular invasion, and increased perineural invasion. Significantly worse disease-specific survival, distant metastasis-free survival, and local recurrence-free survival was seen in patients with high expression of AMACR. Study findings suggest that high expression of AMACR was both a key adverse prognostic factor and a potential therapeutic target in oral SCC.
