Altering product placement to create a healthier layout in supermarkets: Outcomes on store sales, customer purchasing, and diet in a prospective matched controlled cluster study

PLoS Medicine Oct 08, 2021

Vogel C, Crozier S, Penn-Newman D, et al. - Findings demonstrate that improvement in the nutrition profile of store sales can be achieved with healthier supermarket layouts. Such an intervention also likely improves household purchasing and dietary quality. Placing fruits and vegetables near store entrances is advised to be considered alongside policies to limit prominent placement of unhealthy foods.

  • This is a prospective matched controlled cluster trial to inquire if a healthier supermarket layout in discount supermarkets in England improves the healthiness of foods purchased by all customers as well as foods bought and consumed by women customers aged 18 to 45 years.

  • Placing nonfood items and water at checkouts and aisle ends opposite, and repositioning an expanded fruit and vegetable section near the store entrance led to decline in storewide confectionery sales and increase in fruit and vegetable sales.

  • In addition to this, these interventions led to improved fruit and vegetable purchasing and dietary quality in women, however, their confectionery purchasing did not improve.
