Altered Semmes–Weinstein monofilament test results are associated with oxidative stress markers in type 2 diabetic subjects

Journal of Translational Medicine Sep 09, 2017

Martinez-Hervás S, et al. – In this assessment, the experts examined the association between oxidative stress (OS) markers and altered Semmes–Weinstein monofilament (SWM) test results in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients. They concluded that alteration of the glutathione system and malondialdehyde (MDA) values in T2DM patients were associated with loss of proprioceptive (pressure) sensitivity, but not with symptomatic polyneuropathy. These findings would help in understanding how OS affects distal symmetric polyneuropathy in diabetic patients.
