Altered HDL particle in sickle cell disease: Decreased cholesterol content is associated with hemolysis, whereas decreased Apolipoprotein A1 is linked to inflammation
Lipids in Health and Disease Dec 26, 2019
Yalcinkaya A, et al. - A total of 35 pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and 19 healthy controls were evaluated by investigators to determine the associations between lipid profile and parameters of hemolysis, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation in SCD. Hemolysis was found to be related to decreased HDL cholesterol, and inflammation was associated with reduced apolipoprotein A1 levels in this cohort of pediatric patients with SCD. The investigators speculated that the HDL particle was modified during the course of the disease, and that remodeled HDL in SCD may become dysfunctional and lead to slowing down of reverse cholesterol transport.
