Altered bile acid profile associates with cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease—An emerging role for gut microbiome
Alzheimer's & Dementia Oct 18, 2018
Mahmoudian Dehkordi S, et al. - Researchers analyzed the possible role for bile acid (BA), which are end products in cholesterol metabolism and clearance, in cognitive changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). For this investigation, they measured serum levels of 15 primary and secondary BAs and their conjugated forms in 1,464 patients, including 370 cognitively normal older adults, 284 with early mild cognitive impairment, 505 with late mild cognitive impairment, and 305 AD cases enlisted in the AD Neuroimaging Initiative. In this large multicenter study, for the first time an association was reported between changed BA profile, genetic variants involved in AD, and cognitive changes in disease.
