Alterations of the serum N-glycan profile in female patients with major depressive disorder
Journal of Affective Disorders Mar 14, 2018
Boeck C, et al. - As depression and chronic low-grade inflammation have consistently been associated with each other, researchers assessed if patients with major depressive disorder show alterations in the N-glycosylation pattern of serum proteins that might be linked to associated changes in inflammatory processes. Findings revealed an association of major depression with alterations in the serum N-glycan profile. N-glycan alterations showed a positive association with symptom severity of depression. In major depression, serum N-glycan profiles were not indicative of premature aging. Depression was observed to be associated with elevated levels of inflammatory markers [interleukin (IL)-6, C-reactive protein (CRP)]. IL-6 and CRP levels were observed to have a correlation with depression-associated changes in the N-glycan profile.
