Alteration of the risk of pre-oral cancer and cancer in North Indian population by NAT1 and NAT2 polymorphisms genotypes and haplotypes

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Apr 10, 2021

Nigam K, Gupta S, Gupta OP, et al. - Researchers sought to assess oral cancer risk and also that of oral precancerous lesions in relation to polymorphisms in N-acetyl transferases 1,2 genes (NAT1 and NAT2) in a North Indian population. There were 250 patients with pre oral cancer, oral cancer and 250 healthy volunteers were genotypes for the NAT1 and NAT2 gene polymorphisms. A significantly lower risk of oral diseases was observed in people with CT and TT genotypes of NAT1 C > T polymorphism. A significant increase in the risk of OSMF (oral sub mucous fibrosis) and leukoplakia was brought about by TT genotype, for NAT2 C > T polymorphism. An increase in the risk of OSMF was observed in relation to CC genotype for NAT2 T > C polymorphism. Overall, a protective link with oral diseases was demonstrated by NAT1 polymorphism and findings revealed an impact of NAT2 polymorphism and haplotypes on susceptibility to oral diseases in this North Indian population.
