Alopecia areata and overt thyroid diseases: A nationwide population-based study
The Journal of Dermatology Sep 21, 2018
Han TY, et al. - Experts gauged the association between overt autoimmune thyroid diseases and alopecia areata (AA). They conducted a nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study using the Korea National Health Insurance claims database. Patients whose records displayed at least four physician contacts in which AA, alopecia totalis, or alopecia universalis was the principal diagnosis were defined as patients with AA, and these patients were split into a severe and mild to moderate group. An increased risk of Graves’ disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis was seen in the patients with AA, with stronger correlations seen in the severe AA group. Findings suggested a significant association of AA with overt autoimmune thyroid diseases.
