Alopecia areata and overt thyroid diseases: A nationwide population-based study
The Journal of Dermatology Dec 09, 2018
Han TY, et al. - Authors gauged the relationship between alopecia areata (AA) and overt autoimmune thyroid diseases. They conducted a nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study using the Korea National Health Insurance claims database. They also established an age- and sex-matched control group without AA. Findings suggested significant association of AA with overt autoimmune thyroid diseases. Moreover, in the severe AA group the risk was much higher. They noted an increased risk of Graves’ disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis in patients with AA, and the correlations were stronger in the severe AA group.
