Allopurinol augmentation in acute mania: A meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials
Journal of Affective Disorders Oct 05, 2017
Chen AT, et al. - This meta-analysis aimed to ascertain the efficacy profile of allopurinol as an adjunctive treatment for mania in bipolar disorder. The researchers proposed that during acute manic episodes, allopurinol could have some efficacy as an adjunct in reducing mania symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder. Adjunctive allopurinol efficacy could be related to the mood stabilizer used. To determine the optimal clinical application, further controlled trials with greater sample sizes, homogenous dosing, and consistent treatment modalities were required.
