Allogeneic leukocyte-reduced red blood cell transfusion is associated with postoperative infectious complications and cancer recurrence after colon cancer resection
Digestive Surgery Mar 09, 2019
Deeb AP, et al. - Researchers investigated how leukocyte-reduced (LR) transfusions influence postoperative infectious complications, recurrence-free survival, and overall survival (OS) via conducting this retrospective study of patients with stage I–III adenocarcinoma of the colon from 2003 to 2010 who underwent elective resection. They studied 294 patients; 66 (22%) of these received a LR RBC transfusion. Outcomes suggest an increased risk of infectious complications and worsened survival after elective surgery for colon cancer in correlation with transfusion of LR RBCs, irrespective of leukocyte reduction.
