Allergies, preoperative narcotic use, and increased age predict failed same- day discharge after joint replacement
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 03, 2021
Lieberman EG, Hansen EJ, Clohisy JC, et al. - Researchers assessed patient factors related to failure of same-day discharge (SDD) among patients receiving elective total joint arthroplasty in a hospital setting. They performed a retrospective analysis of patients who had primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) from January 31, 2018 to February 1, 2020 by one of the 3 fellowship-trained arthroplasty surgeons. According to the findings, greater than 80% was success of SDD. Experts found that 60% of failures of SDD were due to hypotension, delayed resolution of spinal anesthesia, and nausea. A high risk for failure of SDD following THA or TKA was observed in patients > 70 years, those with > 2 self-reported drug allergies, or those who used preoperative narcotics.
