Allergies and asthma in relation to cancer risk
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jun 12, 2019
Kantor ED, et al. - In the Southern Community Cohort Study, researchers assessed the links between allergies and asthma and cancer risk. They also focused on the impact of race/ethnicity on these links. The information regarding the history of allergies and asthma was extracted from 64,170 participants at baseline (2002-2009). Through 2011, participants were followed. Overall 3,628 incident, invasive cancers, including 667 lung cancers, 539 breast cancers, and 529 prostate cancers, were identified during this time period. For risk of overall cancer, breast cancer, or prostate cancer, they found no links. While an increased lung cancer risk was observed in relation to asthma, a decreased risk was evident in relation to the history of allergies- a link driven by an inverse association among non-Hispanic whites.
