Allergic sensitization and clinical outcomes in urban children with asthma, 2013-2016
Allergy and Asthma Proceedings Jul 27, 2018
Nagarajan S, et al. - Researchers investigated a possible association of food and/or aeroallergen sensitization with worse asthma, pulmonary function tests (PFT), and laboratory markers among 386 children with asthma. They used bivariate, regression to compare asthma severity and/or control, immunoglobulin E (IgE) level, eosinophil counts and/or percentages, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second of expiration (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC, among allergic and nonallergic groups. For highly allergic (≥4 allergens) children, subgroup analyses were conducted. They identified increasing age as a predictor of allergic sensitization and multiple allergen sensitization. Also, multiple allergen sensitization was predicted by worse obstruction on PFT. Asthma management may be improved by continued surveillance of aeroallergen sensitization and taking into account PFT results, particularly in older urban children.
