Allergic disorders and susceptibility to and severity of COVID-19: A nationwide cohort study
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Sep 01, 2020
Yang JM, Koh HY, Moon SY, et al. - This propensity-score–matched nationwide cohort study was conducted in South Korea to examine the link of allergic disorders with the probability of a positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) test result as well as with clinical results of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (admission to ICU, administration of invasive ventilation, and mortality). From the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service of Korea, data were collected from all adult patients (age, > 20 years) who were examined for SARS-CoV-2 in South Korea between January 1, 2020, and May 15, 2020. Following propensity score matching, worse clinical results of COVID-19 were reported in relation to asthma and allergic rhinitis among patients with SARS-CoV-2 test positivity. As per findings in this Korean nationwide cohort, a greater risk of susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 was observed in relation to the presence of allergic rhinitis and asthma, particularly nonallergic asthma.
