All-cause mortality with current and past use of antidepressants or benzodiazepines after major osteoporotic and hip fracture
Osteoporosis International Feb 13, 2019
de Bruin IJA, et al. - In this cohort study within the Dutch PHARMO Database Network, investigators examined 4854 patients of aged 65+ years to assess the utility of antidepressants and benzodiazepines after major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) or hip fracture (HF) and also their association with mortality. They found an increase in the use of cumulative antidepressant and benzodiazepine during the first year after MOF from 10.6 to 14.7% and from 24.0 to 31.4%, respectively. They observed a relationship between recent (31–92 days before each follow-up period) and past use (> 92 days before) of antidepressants and benzodiazepines after MOF or HF and an increased all-cause mortality risk but no link was found with current use (< 30 days before).
