All-cause mortality among children in the US foster care system, 2003-2016
JAMA Apr 23, 2020
Chaiyachati BH, Wood JN, Mitra N, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to compare mortality rates and trends for children in the US foster care system with those in the general population for the 2003-2016 time period. Compared with children in the general population, those in foster care have worse medical and behavioral health. Multiple factors affect this, including a high incidence of poverty, trauma exposure, and chronic medical conditions. Despite known differences in health, less is known about differences in mortality.
