All-cause and cause-specific mortality risks associated with alopecia areata: A Korean nationwide population-based study
JAMA Jun 03, 2019
Lee S, et al. - In this nationwide population-based cohort study involving 73,107 patients with alopecia areata and 731,070 age- and sex-matched controls, researchers examined all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk in alopecia areata patients. Mortality correlated with lung cancer was higher in patients with alopecia totalis/universalis, however, mortality related to diabetes mellitus was significantly lower in patients with alopecia areata. Overall, the investigators concluded that alopecia areata patients have a higher risk of mortality associated with self-harm, psychiatric diseases, and malignant diseases associated with smoking, including lung cancer. Clinicians should treat patients appropriately to ensure emotional and psychological well-being for better outcomes.
