All-cause and cause-specific mortality among people using extramedical opioids: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Jan 08, 2020
Larney S, Tran LT, Leung J, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Embase were examined for studies published from January 1, 2009, to October 3, 2019, in order to determine all-cause and cause-specific crude mortality rates and standardized mortality ratios between individuals utilizing extra medical opioids, involving age- and gender-specific measures when possible. A total of 8,683 known studies, out of which 124 were included in this analysis. Overall findings imply that individuals utilizing extramedical opioids experienced notable excess mortality, much of which was preventable. Moreover, the range of causes for which excess mortality was perceived reflected the multiplicity of risk revelations experienced by this population and the requirement for comprehensive responses to address these.
