Alcohol use among U.S. adults by weight status and weight loss attempt: NHANES, 2011–2016
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Jul 22, 2019
White GE, et al. - Using data for nonpregnant adults aged ≥20 years with BMI ≥18.5 kg/m2 from the 2011–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers examined the links between past-year alcohol use and current weight status, distinguishing among Class 1, 2, and 3 obesity. While controlling for potential confounders, they also assessed the links between past-year attempt at weight loss and alcohol use. According to findings, greater odds of higher weight status were observed relative to a lower occurrence of alcohol use (both sexes) and higher continued volume (female adults only). Despite the recommendation of attenuating caloric intake for weight control by guidelines, more drinking was reported in female adults trying to lose weight.
