Alcohol consumption as a predictor of the progression of spinal structural damage in axial spondyloarthritis: Data from the Catholic Axial Spondyloarthritis COhort (CASCO)
Arthritis Research & Therapy Aug 21, 2019
Min HK, et al. - From a single tertiary hospital, axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) patients were recruited in a prospective cohort by the experts in order to show whether alcohol consumption could prognosticate spinal structural damage in axSpA in a prospective cohort study. In the alcohol drinker group vs non-drinker group, variations in modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spinal Score (mSASSS) and syndesmophyte count over the 2-year period were more marked. More common important mSASSS variations and new syndesmophyte/progression of preexisting syndesmophytes were noted in alcohol drinker group vs non-drinker group. Alcohol consumption demonstrated an important correlation with the progression of spinal structural damage for both mSASSS and syndesmophyte progression. Thus, the relationship between alcohol intake and spinal structural progression in axSpA patients was exhibited for the first time.
