Alcohol consumption and risk of liver cirrhosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The American Journal of Gastroenterology Nov 01, 2019
Roerecke M, Vafaei A, Hasan OSM, et al. - Researchers sought to systematically summarize how different levels of alcohol consumption are associated with incidence of liver cirrhosis. Searching MEDLINE and Embase up to March 6, 2019, they included seven cohort studies and two case–control studies, providing data from 2,629,272 participants with 5,505 cases of liver cirrhosis. The analysis revealed that for liver cirrhosis, alcohol is a major risk factor with risk increasing exponentially. Occasional drinkers exhibited no increased risk. Relative to men, women seemed to be at higher risk even with little alcohol consumption. They recommend avoiding high alcohol consumption and implementing interventions to reduce its intake among people drinking at high levels.
