Alcohol and ideal cardiovascular health: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Clinical Cardiology Dec 06, 2018
Ogunmoroti O, et al. - In a multiethnic population including 6,506 participants free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and aged 45-84 years, researchers examined the associations of alcohol consumption withcardiovascular health (CVH), assessed by the AHA Life's Simple 7 (LS7) metrics, presuming that heavy alcohol consumption is associated with worse CVH. They also determined the impact of biological sex, if any, on the associations. Each LS7 metric was scored 0-2 points. They grouped participants as never, former, or current drinkers and further categorized current drinkers as < 1 (light), 1-2 (moderate), and > 2 (heavy) drinks/day. They found that heavy alcohol consumption was related to unfavorable CVH. Light or moderate drinking was associated with a more favorable CVH in women. Overall, the association was not strong.
