Alcohol and drug use before and during the first year after traumatic brain injury
Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation May 16, 2018
Beaulieu-Bonneau S, et al. - Before and in the first year post-traumatic brain injury (TBI), the researchers compared individuals with mild and moderate/severe TBI on alcohol and drug use and substance use disorders. In addition, sociodemographic and injury-related variables linked with substance use disorders were investigated. Participants were 225 adults hospitalized in a level I trauma center after TBI. As compared to more severe injuries, individuals with milder injuries return to alcohol use earlier. Given that substance use could alter recovery, preventive recommendations and systematic follow-ups were warranted regardless of injury severity and access to rehabilitation.
