Albumin infusion rate and plasma volume expansion: A randomized clinical trial in postoperative patients after major surgery
Critical Care Jun 06, 2019
Statkevicius S, et al. - Among patients with signs of hypoperfusion following major abdominal surgery, researchers investigated whether a slow (180 min) rather than rapid (30 min) administration of fluid would lead to greater plasma volume expansion by 5% albumin. They found that a slow infusion of colloid vs a rapid infusion did not lead to a greater plasma volume expansion. In fact, a less efficient plasma volume expansion was achieved with a slow infusion, as reflected by a smaller alteration in the area under the plasma volume curve. No impact of a rapid infusion on vascular leak, as measured following completion of the infusion, was evident.
