Airway management in patients with mucopolysaccharidoses: The progression towards difficult intubation
Paediatric Anaesthesia Apr 04, 2019
Madoff LU, et al. - Researchers retrospectively reviewed mucopolysaccharidoses patients presenting for surgery, to assess the difficulty of airway management over time in these patients, and to determine the influence of bone marrow transplant and/or enzyme replacement therapy on airway difficulty. Taking into consideration the patients' ages at the time of surgery, number of intubation attempts, equipment used for intubation, the difficulty of mask ventilation and difficulty of LMA placement, the participants were divided into groups. Findings revealed a progression towards difficult intubation in these patients in association with getting older. With aging, mask ventilation and LMA placement did not become more difficult. Airway difficulty was not influenced by bone marrow transplantation, while difficult intubations in younger patients were reported in relation to enzyme replacement therapy.
