Airway inflammation and injury in children with prevalent weakly acidic gastroesophageal refluxes
Respiratory Medicine Sep 04, 2018
Sacco O, et al. - A 3-year retrospective review of the medical records of patients who had fiberoptic bronchoscopy for difficult-to treat chronic/recurrent respiratory symptoms and who had a positive multiple intraluminal esophageal impedance (pH/MII) monitoring was performed to describe the airway inflammation in children with more prevalent weakly acidic refluxes (WAR) or acid refluxes (AR) (defined according to a ROC curve analysis). Study findings suggested that, in these patients, WAR events are related to significant airway inflammation and injury that, due to biochemical mechanisms involved, were likely not completely preventable and/or counteracted by anti-acid treatments.
