AIDS-related endemic mycoses in Western Cape, South Africa and clinical mimics: A cross-sectional study of adults with advanced HIV and recent-onset, widespread skin lesions
Open Forum Infectious Diseases Sep 01, 2017
Schwartz IS, et al. – This paper aspired to characterize skin lesions of systemic mycoses (SM) in South Africa. It also intended to distinguish these from common HIV–related dermatoses. Owing to the recent antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and the presence of plaques or scale crust, clinicians ought to take SM into account in patients with advanced HIV infection, in this geographic area. Early skin biopsy was crucial for the timely diagnosis and treatment due to the clinical overlap between SM and other dermatoses.
