Agreement between capillary and venous lactate in Emergency Department patients: Prospective observational study

BMJ Open Apr 09, 2019

Graham CA, et al. - In this prospective observational study involving 240 patients, researchers examined the agreement of capillary lactate measured utilizing handheld analysers (CL-Nova and CL-Scout+ measured by Nova and Lactate Scout+ analyzers) and the reference venous level evaluated utilizing point-of-care testing (POCT) blood gas analyser (VL-Ref). Subjects triaged as ‘urgent’ (Category 3 of a 5-point scale), aged ≥18 years during 2016 were eligible. According to findings, poor agreement was found between capillary lactate and reference values. The clinical utility of capillary lactate POCT was not supported in this analysis. Venous lactate measured by Scout+ handheld analyser, however, might have the potential for screening patients who may need further testing.
