Aging effect on sleepiness and apneas severity in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: A meta-analysis study
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Sep 12, 2019
Iannella G, Vicini C, Colizza A, et al. - Since it is commonly believed that the AHI score tends to increase with aging regarding the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in elderly patients, researchers analyzed the literature on the studies comparing older (> 65 years old) and young (< 65 years old) OSA patients on the effect of aging on daytime sleepiness (ESS evaluation) and OSA severity (AHI assessment). Although there would appear to be a direct correlation between aging and AHI values, this meta-analysis research did not show any important variations in baseline AHI between young (< 65-year-old) and elderly (> 65-year-old) patients. In young or middle-aged patients, the impacts of OSAS on daytime sleepiness appear to be much more prominent than in elderly patients.
