Aggressive variants of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma are associated with high-risk features, but not decreased survival
Surgery Oct 21, 2019
Holoubek SA, Yan H, Khokar AH, et al. - Researchers examined classic vs aggressive variants of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PMTC) regarding the pathologic features and associated overall survival. From the National Cancer Data Base (2004–2015), they identified 82,056 patients with classic (cPTMC), 923 with tall cell (mTCV), and 219 with diffuse sclerosing (mDSV) PTC (≤ 1 cm) subtype. The analysis revealed more aggressive pathologic features of mTCV and mDSV and hence these were treated more aggressively. However, there were no differences in overall survival compared with propensity-matched cPTMC patients.
