Age-stratified national trends in pulmonary embolism admissions
Chest Jun 28, 2019
Pauley ED, et al. - Researchers analyzed data for hospitalizations of 2,159,568 patients (≥20 years) with a primary diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) between 1/2000 and 9/2015 from the National Inpatient Sample database in order to evaluate national trends in admission rate, discharge disposition, and length of stay (LOS) in these patients. Outcomes revealed an increase in the rate of hospitalization for PE across all age groups between 2000 and 2015. Despite improvements in average LOS and inpatient mortality, average hospital charges increased across all age groups, and more resources (ie, home health) were needed for patients upon discharge. Elderly patients had the most apparent increased resource utilization. This implies the necessity for targeted clinical trials designed to improve outcomes in all age brackets.
