Age-specific prevalence and factors associated with normal blood pressure among US adults
American Journal of Hypertension Oct 07, 2021
Muntner P, Jaeger BC, Hardy ST, et al. - Findings showed an association of normal blood pressure (BP) with healthy lifestyle factors as well as with a lower prevalence of adverse health conditions among US adults ≥65 years.
This is an analysis of US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2018 data (n=21,581) to ascertain characteristics of US adults ≥65 years with normal BP.
Normal BP prevalence in US adults who were 18-44, 45-64, 65-74 and ≥75 years was 57.8%, 25.3%, 11.2% and 5.0%, respectively.
Post-multivariable adjustment, normal BP vs increased BP/hypertension was more common in US adults (aged ≥65 years) with moderate and no vs heavy alcohol intake, ≥150 vs <150 minutes of physical activity per week, overweight and normal weight vs obesity and a high Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score.
Less probability of having good or fair/poor vs excellent/very good self-rated health, diabetes, albuminuria, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure was observed in those with normal BP vs elevated BP/hypertension.
