Age-specific and sex-specific reference intervals for non-fasting lipids and apolipoproteins in 7,260 healthy Chinese children and adolescents measured with an Olympus AU5400 analyser: A cross-sectional study

BMJ Open Aug 24, 2019

Liu J, Dai Y, Yuan E, et al. - Following the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute EP28-A3c guidelines, researchers conducted this study to determine age-specific and gender-specific reference intervals for non-fasting lipids and apolipoproteins in healthy Chinese children and adolescents. From 7,260 healthy Chinese children and adolescents, they obtained non-fasting samples and analyzed these using the Olympus AU5400 analyzer for triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B (ApoB). They used using the Harris-Boyd method to partition the age-related and gender-related reference intervals. Establishment of pediatric reference intervals for non-fasting lipids and apolipoproteins was done in this work. In line with other studies, girls had higher TC, LDL-C and ApoB levels compared with boys. Further, there were age-related differences for all analytes. As age and gender have not been considered in previously used reference intervals. These age-specific and gender-specific reference intervals established in this study may lead to enhanced management and assessment of pediatric diseases.
