Age-related effects of bariatric surgery on early atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk reduction

Jonker FHW, et al. - This study was performed with the aim to assess the exact effects of bariatric surgery on carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) reduction in different age groups. In patients with morbid obesity in all evaluated age categories, a significant CIMT decrease was observed with bariatric surgery. In younger patients, these beneficial effects of bariatric surgery were more pronounced. While in patients of 50 years and older, cardiovascular risk reduction by bariatric surgery appeared inferior.
