Age-related course of visual acuity obtained with ETDRS 2000 charts in persons with healthy eyes
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology May 20, 2019
Radner W, et al. - Researchers examined 200 participants (400 eyes) 25 to 74 years of age (114 females, 86 males), 20 per 5-year age group, for the age-related course of best-corrected visual acuity in healthy eyes. The ETDRS 2000 charts were used at a distance of 4 m (Precision Vision, Woodstock, IL, USA) to measure best-corrected visual acuity monocularly. In this work, until the age of 54 years, constantly high best-corrected visual acuity was observed. At 55 to 59 years of age, they noted the development of an age-related break-point. Until age 64, healthy eyes could develop a minimal angle of resolution smaller than 1 min of arc (visual acuity better 0.0 logMAR).
