Age distribution, trends, and forecasts of under-5 mortality in 31 sub-Saharan African countries: A modeling study
PLoS Medicine Apr 05, 2019
Mejia-Guevara I, et al. - In this study, authors studied the data from 106 nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs) to examine the trends in the age at death distribution for under-5 kids, and also to the prognosticate the age patterns and mortality levels by country in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). They observed substantive drops in death rates at every age in mortality model in most nations, with notable variations in the age patterns over time. They found a decrease from 3.3% (annual rate of reduction [ARR] 0.1%) in Lesotho to 76.4% (ARR 5.2%) in Malawi in under-5 mortality rates (U5MRs). The velocity of decline was more on average (ARR 3.2%) as compared to that recorded for infants (IMRs) (ARR 2.7%) and neonatal (NMRs) (ARR 2.0%) mortality rates.
