Age-dependent trends in survival after adult in-hospital cardiac arrest
Resuscitation Apr 08, 2020
Wiberg S, Holmberg MJ, Donnino MW, et al. - From 2000 to 2016, trends in survival to hospital discharge after adult in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) were examined across age groups. The Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation registry was assessed for IHCA patients between 2000 and 2016 for this observational study. Among a total of 234,767 IHCA patients, the absolute increase in survival per calendar year among patients younger than 50 years was 0.8%, among patients between 50 and 59 years was 0.6%, among patients between 60 and 69 years was 0.5%, among patients between 70 and 79 years was 0.5%, and among patients older than 80 years was 0.5%. A significant interaction was observed between calendar year and age group, implying that the rate of improvement in survival over time was significantly different between age groups. These findings suggest that from 2000 to 2016, rates of survival to discharge have improved significantly for patients with IHCA across all age groups. .
