Age- and sex-stratified trends in elective and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm repair from 2003 to 2016

Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 25, 2018

Salata K, et al. - Via performing a population-based time-series analysis of elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (eAAA) and ruptured AAA (rAAA) repairs in Ontario, Canada, from 2003 to 2016, researchers determined the trends in open and endovascular repair of eAAA and rAAA stratified by age and sex. From 2003 to 2016, 19,489 eAAA (12,232 open surgical repair [OSR: 63%] and 7257 endovascular aneurysm repair [EVAR: 37%]) and 2732 rAAA (2466 OSR [90%] and 266 EVAR [10%]) repairs were identified. Observations suggest a significant increase in EVAR uptake in all strata, particularly in older patients, whereas there was a significant decrease in elective OSR in all but the female stratum. Older patients showed increased eAAA repair rate reflecting the availability of a lower risk repair option for comorbid patients, whereas women showed a stable use of elective OSR reflecting the continued graft-related limitations for AAA repair in women.
